BNS Jobs: Grounds Maintenance Supervisor, Bristol, Full Time

Job Overview:
BNS is seeking a skilled and hands-on Grounds Maintenance Supervisor to actively participate in the delivery of grounds maintenance services across multiple sites, including residential estates, blocks of flats, and commercial properties in Bristol and the surrounding areas. This role combines leadership, client engagement, practical grounds maintenance tasks, and the responsibility of pricing and quoting for works. The successful candidate will supervise a team, develop detailed maintenance specifications, and ensure that all activities are delivered to the highest industry, company, and best practice standards, while complying with all relevant legislation and environmental regulations.

This role will be a combination of office days and on-site days each week.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Team Management:

  • Supervise the grounds maintenance team, providing clear direction, mentorship, and performance feedback.
  • Work alongside the team on-site, leading by example and ensuring tasks are completed to high industry standards and best practices.
  • Foster a collaborative and productive team environment, supporting professional development and training.

Client Engagement & Business Development:

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with existing clients, addressing concerns and ensuring satisfaction.
  • Meet with potential new clients to understand their needs, present services, and secure new contracts.

Pricing & Quoting:

  • Prepare accurate and competitive quotes for grounds maintenance and landscaping projects.
  • Develop cost estimates based on labour, materials, and equipment requirements, with the support of the Facilities Management team and Quantity Surveyor for costing.
  • Collaborate with clients to agree on pricing and specifications for tailored services.

Site Work & Grounds Maintenance Tasks:

  • On-site days will involve actively participating in grounds maintenance tasks, including grass cutting, hedge trimming, landscaping, and upkeep of outdoor spaces.
  • Carry out hard landscaping and maintenance of specific features such as attenuation ponds.
  • Ensure all work is completed to the highest industry, environmental, and ecological standards, meeting both client expectations and company benchmarks.

Project Planning & Specification Development:

  • Develop and implement detailed maintenance specifications, including annual plans and 5–10-year grounds maintenance strategies tailored to site requirements.
  • Create site-specific specifications for new contracts, ensuring alignment with client expectations, relevant legislation, and company standards.
  • Monitor and evaluate ongoing projects, ensuring they are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest standard.

Operational Oversight:

  • Conduct regular site visits to ensure adherence to specifications and identify areas for improvement.
  • Manage resource allocation, including materials, equipment, and labour, to maximise efficiency.
  • Oversee the maintenance and safe use of tools and equipment, ensuring operational readiness.
  • Support the creation and implementation of processes and procedures for grounds service operations.

Health, Safety, and Environmental Compliance:

  • Enforce health and safety policies across all sites, conducting risk assessments and ensuring team compliance.
  • Provide training on safe working practices and maintain an ongoing commitment to health, safety, and environmental excellence.
  • Ensure all works comply with relevant legislation, including wildlife protection, waste management, and other ecological considerations.

Quality Assurance & Problem Solving:

  • Conduct quality control checks to ensure work meets or exceeds industry, client, and regulatory standards.
  • Address operational challenges and resolve client issues promptly and effectively.
  • Continuously assess processes and implement improvements to enhance service quality.

Documentation & Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate records of contracts, site visits, resources, and completed work.
  • Provide detailed reports and updates to senior management on project progress, client feedback, and team performance.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Proven Experience: Extensive experience in grounds maintenance, with a strong background in landscaping, horticulture, and groundskeeping.
  • Leadership Skills: Demonstrated ability to lead, inspire, and manage a team while working alongside them on-site.
  • Technical Expertise: Proficiency in carrying out and maintaining grounds maintenance tasks and equipment.
  • Client Management: Strong communication and interpersonal skills for engaging with clients and fostering long-term relationships.
  • Strategic Planning: Expertise in developing detailed and practical maintenance specifications for diverse projects.
  • Organisational Ability: Exceptional planning and multitasking skills, capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Health, Safety, and Environmental Compliance: Comprehensive knowledge of health, safety, and environmental legislation and best practices in grounds maintenance.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: A proactive and resourceful approach to addressing challenges and improving service delivery.
  • Trade Body Membership: Membership of or experience working with relevant trade organisations, such as:
    • Association of Professional Landscapers (APL)
    • British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI)
    • Landscape Institute (LI)
    • Horticultural Trades Association (HTA)
    • European Landscape Contractors Association (ELCA)
