Location: Hybrid (office / home-based) with regular site travel.

Job Summary

BNS is a leader in providing services to multiple types of properties including residential, commercial, Housing Associations, educational facilities, care facilities, etc.

To assist in the servicing of these properties BNS is looking to employ a Health & Safety Compliance Officer into the well established and successful Health & Safety Team.

The Health and Safety Compliance Officer role encompasses a broad range of health and safety responsibilities. These include undertaking inspections, audits, and risk assessments across a varied property portfolio, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, Approved Codes of Practice, and recognised best practice.

There will be a strong operational focus on fire door inspections and legionella risk assessment and water hygiene management.

This role is suited to someone who is confident working independently on site, produces high-quality reports, and can communicate clearly with clients and responsible persons.

The position involves regular travel to client sites, very occasional overnight stays, and flexibility to respond to client needs where required.

Key Responsibilities

Fire Safety

  • Conduct fire door inspections in line with current best practice and recognised guidance (e.g. British Woodworking Federation guidance and Institute of Fire Engineers principles).
  • Identify deficiencies relating to fire door condition, installation, signage, hardware, and compartmentation.
  • Produce clear, risk-based reports with appropriate recommendations.
  • Support responsible persons in understanding compliance obligations under relevant fire safety legislation.
  • Contribute to wider fire risk assessment reviews where required.

Legionella Risk Assessment

  • Undertake legionella risk assessments in accordance with Health and Safety Executive guidance (including ACOP L8 and HSG274).
  • Identify risks associated with water systems including storage tanks, calorifiers, pipework, and outlets.
  • Develop practical and proportionate written schemes of control.
  • Advise clients on monitoring regimes, sampling, temperature checks, cleaning schedules, and record keeping.
  • Review and audit existing water hygiene management systems.

General Health & Safety Compliance

  • Conduct site inspections and general risk assessments across a range of premises.
  • Identify hazards relating to premises, activities, and occupancy.
  • Provide practical recommendations to improve compliance and reduce risk.
  • Maintain accurate and auditable inspection records.
  • Investigate and report accidents, incidents, and near misses.
  • Deliver toolbox talks and health and safety training where required.
  • Support the implementation and testing of emergency procedures.
  • Provide day-to-day advice to staff and clients on health and safety matters.
  • Promote a positive and proactive safety culture.

Desirable Qualifications & Skills

  • Fire Door Inspection certification (e.g. diploma or inspection qualification).
  • Legionella Risk Assessment qualification.
  • Membership of a relevant professional body (e.g. Institution of Occupational Safety and Health or Institute of Fire Safety Managers).
  • RPII Operational Inspector (Playgrounds).
  • IOSH Managing Safely.
  • NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (or working towards).
  • Experience conducting fire door inspections and/or legionella risk assessments.
  • Working knowledge of UK health and safety legislation.
  • Experience producing structured, client-facing reports.
  • Experience working within a consultancy or multi-site environment.
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel.
